Editor note: RECORDED 4/2/15 prior to the final roster being set.

As the Royals open their defense of the AL Championship, Jeff and Mike talked about the latest spring training news and the makeup of the roster – which is mostly set, barring injuries.

We offered some bold predictions for the upcoming season, some of which are probably nowhere near going to come true – but hey they might. We also wandered down memory lane to recall some past Royals and past seasons and events, including some painful Kansas City sports moments.

Kansas City Baseball Vault — Prospects and Various Spring Training Things

kcBaseballVaultBanner-1024x409

With spring training starting up, we got caught up on the latest news out there, but mostly talked about prospects and minor leaguers. Every team needs depth and the Royals are no different.

We discussed which players might get the call this year, which ones might have an impact, and which prospects are the most intriguing for the next season and beyond. The usual suspects were brought up (Kyle Zimmer, Raul A. Mondesi, Sean Manaea) but we picked out some lesser known names too.

And then at the end Jeff wanted my take on the Oscars, I talked about an upcoming bet I have in Westport, and general hilarity was had.

Pine Tar Podcast Spring Training Edition w/ J.J. Picollo

Royals Assistant GM and Head of Player Personnel J.J. Picollo talked with Clint about changes in pitching philosophy within the organization, the draft of Sean Manaea and myriad of other topics. Also on this podcast David and Clint make their 2014 MLB predictions including Royals MVP’s and season win total.

Camp Cuts, Dreaming on Pitching, and Bullpen Chatter

We had a lot to cover this week and jumped right into talking about the first cuts of camp, including sending John Lamb, Chris Dwyer, Kyle Zimmer, and others to minor league camp. None of the cuts were that surprising, but some – like Dwyer and perhaps Zimmer – may end up in the majors sooner than later.

That led us to dreaming a bit on the pitching prospects in this wave. Buoyed by impressive scouting reports on Sean Manaea, and a strong start for Yordano Ventura, we tried to project a Royals rotation for next year and beyond.

Then Troy talked about his trip to Surprise and what he saw from Lane Adams, Jason Adam, and Lorenzo Cain.

We shifted gears to talk about Luke Hochevar‘s UCL tear and resulting decision to undergo Tommy John surgery. As a result of losing Hochevar, Wade Davis shifts to the bullpen, and we talked about his viability there. Speaking of the bullpen, we talked about the strange hate for Kelvin Herrera by a chunk of Royals fans, Kansas City fandom, and David Glass – all the good KC topics.

BONUS: Since the whole Ervin Santana saga has unfolded very much like a soap opera, Mike imagined what would happen if it was reported like a 1930’s radio serial drama. Santana reportedly came to agreement with Atlanta on Wednesday morning, ending our long national nightmare.

Kelly’s Westport Inn and the Kansas City Baseball Vault Present: Extended Minor League Season 2013

This week, we wanted to take a look at some Arizona Fall League happenings, including checking in on Jason Adam, Jorge Bonifacio, Noel Arguelles, and Orlando Calixte, among others.

We also discussed other prospects – the big names, like Hunter Dozier, Bubba Starling, Cheslor Cuthbert, Sean Manaea, etc. Dozier and Cuthbert especially came up while talking about Mike Moustakas and the significance of his assignment to winter ball in Venezuela.

We took a look at the 40 man roster and guessed at which players might be dropping off this winter, what implications that may mean for the Rule 5 draft in December, and talked about guys like Ryan Verdugo, Michael Mariot, and guessed at the fate of Arguelles.
