On Comebacks and Previewing ALDS Game 5

kcBaseballVaultBanner-1024x409

After another historic comeback win by the Royals in the postseason, the ALDS goes to a deciding Game 5.

It comes down to a Johnny Cueto start.

But first, we talked about the Game 4 comeback and the approach that saved the Royals season.

Then we looked at Game 5, wondering if the big comeback can fuel the Royals to another win and another big run like last season. We asked if Dallas Keuchel would pull a Madison Bumgarner, if Eric Hosmer has turned it back on, and if the Royals can pull it off.

Royals Pitching Staff Adjustments and Playoff Possibilities

kcBaseballVaultBanner-1024x409

This week, we talked about the demotion of Greg Holland and its impact on the bullpen plus the game of musical chairs taking place with the pitching staff. Appropriately, we recorded during a particularly disastrous Jeremy Guthrie start…

Then we talked about Alex Rios’s hot streak, Kendrys Morales’s huge Sunday, and the depth of the Royals’ lineup this year.

After a break, we checked in on the playoff standings and the potential matchups ahead, including some of the weaknesses the other teams have that make them less scary.

Kansas City Baseball Vault: 02/18/15 – Talking ZiPS with Dan Szymborski

kcBaseballVaultBanner-1024x409

This week, we welcomed ESPN writer and Fangraphs contributor Dan Szymborski to the show. Szymborski is the creator of the ZiPS projection system geared towards projected each player on each team during the winter.

We talked to Dan about what ZiPS is trying to do and the nature of statistical evaluation and its pitfalls and successes, including long-term trends, different WAR calculations, and those who may dismiss such tomfoolery.

We also talked about the prognosis for this year, and what may be in store for the Royals including his most likely choice to breakout and to bust.

There was also some nonsense in the outtakes and a dynamite Lee Judge impersonation. You can (and should) follow Dan on Twitter at @DSyzmborski.

(Editor’s note: Some technical problems cut out about three minutes in the beginning, so let me summarize Dan’s explanation of ZiPS: it’s a computer program geared towards projecting the future with multiple factors in play and multiple simulations, trying to get as close as possible with information available.)

Kansas City Baseball Vault: Morales and Rios and Wil – Oh My!

kcBaseballVaultBanner-1024x409

After some winter hibernation, the Royals finally got things going on the transaction front, and we talked about the Royals’ moves to fill out the lineup.

So we compared Kendrys Morales and Billy Butler and the general market for hitters, including the Royals shift from their goal of a floating DH to settling on Morales.

We also discussed Alex Rios and his down 2014. The Royals found themselves with limited options after other teams picked the outfield free agent class clean, but is there still hope for a rebound?

We’ve talked in the past about how the Royals lean towards hoping for improvement rather than what looks like hard analysis, and their offseason moves reflect that.

We wrapped up by discussing the Wil Myers trade rumors. Two years after the Royals dealt him for James Shields, Myers may be on the move again. Is that the market playing out, or is there something about Myers causing another move?

We’ll keep tracking the Royals moves this offseason, including what may be a couple of pitching acquisitions (Jeff thinks a trade is the most likely route; Mike thinks the Royals will fill from free agency). And finally, for anyone interested, Mike gave a real-time review of the Royals-themed beer from Boulevard – Crown Town Ale.

Triple Play Podcast 20 – Draft Recap, Morales, A’s, Hosmer & Alex Gordon

This week, Hunter, Matt and Reese discuss the Kendrys Morales signing and what it means for the Twins. We also talk about what it could mean for the Royals.

We had to talk about the Athletics. They are on fire. Not only are the crushing the ball at the plate, but they’re also pitching well, despite losing Jarrod Parker and A.J. Griffin with elbow injuries.

When we talk about the Royals, there’s plenty of bad news to go around, especially with Hosmer, but there’s some good news as well. For more than a month now, Alex Gordon has been hitting like he did in 2011, giving major offensive output.

Salvador Perez has also picked things up after getting some rest.

We recap the first few rounds of the draft and talk about how good or bad the picks are.
