As spring training games started up, the Royals started making a little bit of news. And Jeff returned to help host (after his first few weeks adjusting to parenthood).

The Royals signed Salvador Perez to a contract extension, so we talked about the money, the risks, and what it means for the organization.

We also talked briefly about Jarrod Dyson‘s oblique injury, Bubba Starling‘s rising hope, and we shared some thoughts about Kyle Zimmer‘s solid spring debut.

Considering Some Royals Spring Training Questions

Spring training approaches, so this week Mike invited Hunter Samuels (@huntersamuels on Twitter) on the show to discuss some questions ahead of the players reporting.

The theme was position battles, and featured thoughts on Omar Infante vs. Christian Colon, Drew Butera vs. Tony Cruz, and who will round out the bullpen. In the second segment, the focus shifted to what might play out with right field and the vast number of options on the 40 man roster and free agent market. Hunter provided some scouting reports on outfielders Brett Eibner, Jose Martinez, and Reymond Fuentes, and pitcher Miguel Almonte.

After a break, we then discussed the Royals Hall of Fame candidates, including Gil Meche, Kevin Seitzer, Mike Sweeney, and the phenomenal Bo Jackson.

Kansas City Baseball Vault: Playoff Race Anxiety

kcBaseballVaultBanner-1024x409

As the season enters its final weeks, the pressure is mounting. The Royals offense has sputtered and some players are showing signs of wear.

We talked about the remaining series against Detroit, the expanded rosters, tried to do some schedule math (we failed – that suspended game crosses everyone’s wires…) and talked about the impact of Danny Duffy’s injury.

We also looked at what options exist to fill in for Duffy in his next start and the quick ascent of Brandon Finnegan. We also talked briefly about Lorenzo Cain in comparison to Jarrod Dyson.

And now…we see what the Royals have left in the tank.
